From the iconic Icebergs to the hidden gem at Wylie's Baths, the ocean pools along Sydney's eastern coastline are among the city's greatest treasures. Here's your complete guide.

Sydney's ocean pools are a uniquely Australian institution — saltwater pools built into the rocks along the coastline, filled and flushed by the tides, offering safe swimming in a spectacular natural setting. The stretch of coast from Bondi to Coogee has some of the finest examples in the world.

Bondi Icebergs

The most famous of them all. The Icebergs pool at the southern end of Bondi Beach has been here since 1929, when the Bondi Icebergs Swimming Club was founded by a group of lifesavers who wanted to keep fit through winter. The name comes from their tradition of swimming through the coldest months — "icebergs" because they never melt.

Today the pool is open to the public (small entry fee) and is one of the most photographed spots in Australia. The experience of swimming laps while waves crash over the edge is extraordinary. The adjoining Icebergs Dining Room and Bar is one of Sydney's finest restaurants.

Wylie's Baths, Coogee

Less famous but arguably more beautiful, Wylie's Baths at the southern end of Coogee Beach has been operating since 1907. The pool is set into a dramatic rocky headland with sweeping ocean views. It's a calmer, more contemplative experience than Icebergs — a favourite of serious lap swimmers and those seeking a quieter morning.

Bronte Baths

The Bronte Baths are the oldest ocean pool in Australia, dating from the 1880s. Located at the southern end of Bronte Beach, the pool is free to use and has a wonderful, unpretentious character. The surrounding parkland makes it a perfect spot for a post-swim picnic.

Tips for Ocean Pool Swimming

Check conditions before you go — after heavy rain, ocean pools can be closed due to water quality concerns. Early morning is the best time to swim, before the crowds arrive. Most pools have changing facilities and showers.
