Thinking about taking your first surf lesson at Bondi Beach? Here's an honest account of what to expect, how to prepare, and why Bondi is one of the best places in the world to start.

There's a reason Bondi Beach has been producing surfers for over a century. The beach has a gentle, consistent shore break that's ideal for beginners, experienced instructors who've been teaching here for decades, and an infectious surf culture that makes you want to get in the water.

Choosing a Surf School

Let's Go Surfing is the most established school on the beach, with a large team of qualified instructors and a strong safety record. They run group lessons several times daily, which are great for beginners and more affordable. Private lessons are available for those who want more focused instruction.

What to Expect

A typical beginner lesson runs about two hours. The first 30–40 minutes are spent on the sand learning the basics: how to read waves, how to paddle, and the pop-up technique (getting from lying to standing). Then you're in the water, and instructors push you into waves and help you find your feet.

Most people stand up on their first lesson. The waves at Bondi are forgiving — they're not too powerful, and the sandy bottom means falls are soft.

What to Bring

Wear a swimsuit or boardshorts. The school provides wetsuits (useful even in summer for sun protection) and boards. Bring sunscreen, a towel, and water. Leave valuables in a locker — the schools all have secure storage.

After Your Lesson

The best thing about learning to surf at Bondi is what comes after. Grab a coffee at Speedo's, watch the more experienced surfers from the promenade, and start planning your next session. Most people are back in the water within a week.
